Your Neighborhood with Kimo Quance (Episode 16: University City)
In today’s episode we head a little north west from previous neighborhoods as we look into the interesting development of University City. Around World War I, the area was previously used as Camp Calvin B. Matthews, a rifle base for the military up until around 1964. This was because the land was transformed into what today as the University of California San Diego and UTC shopping area. And just east of that area lies the community of University City or UC for short. UC’s remaining borders are maintained by the nearby cities and neighborhoods of La Jolla, Miramar, and North Clairemont.
The community of University City officially acquired its plans for development in 1959. They were originally created with the intent that the community would be home to students and employees of UCSD. However, within the next couple decades, UC expanded into the well rounded community that we are familiar with today.
The area is home to all of the neighborhood's needs filled with schools, shopping centers, recreation, and so much more.
Referring back to our latest episode, the new blue trolley line drops right off at the Westfield University Towne Centre or what San Diegans more commonly refer to as “UTC.” What was originally constructed in 1977, has been more recently updated with various construction and revitalization projects that have accumulated to around a billion dollars in expenses. And with the grand opening of the UTC Transit Center, now all have plenty of opportunity to scour the 199 stores and services available for customers in all needs, especially around Christmas time.
The beauty behind this unique area, like so many others that we have talked about, is that it has so many great neighborhoods within minutes from the area. This is great because it offers more schooling options, shorter commutes to work, and can still be within minutes to some of the best beaches in San Diego. Some of these neighborhoods include:
The city of Clairemont and Clairemont Mesa, where you can find hundreds if not thousands of great businesses and restaurants
La Jolla, home to great beaches, 360 views from Mt. Soledad
Just south in Miramar you have the Air Force base where they put on the best annual air show hands down.
The triangular shaped community divides its commercial and residential district by Rose Canyon. There are various hiking trails and the canyon actually runs down all the way to Mission Bay down south. This natural geographical area is also where the Kumeyaay Indians inhabited part of San Diego. At the bottom of the canyon is where the tribe had set up a seasonal village and camp so the native people could collect acorns, hunt, and use the slow stream of water for various activities.
UC’s well rounded area also includes some great K-12 educational programs. Included in the area are the public schools of:
Marie Curie Elementary School, John D. Spreckels Elementary School, Doyle Elementary School , Standley Middle School and University City High School
And some of the private schools include:
Mission Bay Montessori Academy (preschool - 6th grade) and La Jolla Country Day School (preschool - 12th grade)
In conclusion, the neighborhood of University City continues to check off a lot of the boxes when it comes to looking for a neighborhood to call home, and many other boxes on the check list.
