BEECH MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Two people at Beech Mountain Resort in Avery County were taken to the hospital after a hydrant broke on Friday, according to a statement from the resort’s management.

The rupture occurred after a guest skied into the water and air hydrant during snowmaking operations at the resort, west of Boone near the state line. The guest was uninjured.

The pipe burst under a loaded chair on the ski lift, resulting in other guests being soaked in water. Resort management said its operations and safety team worked quickly to unload the lift and drain the hydrant system.

Avery County EMS took two people to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
