Nurse Emily Whewell says NO to vaccine mandates: This hill is MY hill

This hill is OUR hill.

Hi, my name is Emily. I've been a nurse for over ten years and caring for people for 17 years. I haven't yet received correspondence from my employer regarding the jab, but I know that the time is approaching. I'll be blunt. I'm worried for my future, but I'm resolute in my decision to uphold the basic right to decide what I put in my body. Informed consent is the cornerstone of all patient treatment, and that right should be extended to all including the members of staff caring for them.

Where there is risk, there must be choice. The choice to continue doing the job I love will be taken from me. I am only one of many in this position. There are over 200 000 in the health service, who for their own personal reasons have decided to exercise bodily autonomy. All these hard working, thoughtful, caring and experienced professionals will at some point or other have been lumped into the category of 'antivaxxers' by the media and others position of authority. I certainly feel that I have.

Imagine going in to do your job with this pressure looming over you everyday. These are good, strong people that you and I need in our health service. We can't afford to lose them. Staff are now receiving letters to their homes. Many of them on Christmas eve, with deadlines laid out. The irony being that the Trusts that employ us have spent years talking to us about staff mental health and well-begin, thanking us for our hard work and telling us that we're all in this together.

The trust executives, Boris Johnson and Sajid Javid, have been telling us to have a great Christmas while simultaneously implementing this process. I see no sincerity in any of them. There is a positive to have come from this that I must thank the government for. I've connected recently with so many wonderful people and colleagues that have felt isolated in their departments. We are finding each other and gaining strength from each other and from that we gain hope. This hill is my hill.
