The January 13 explosion according to Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Wellington warning triggered a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 52000 ft (15800 m) altitude or flight level 520 and is moving at 05 kts in N direction.
The volcano is part of the highly active Tonga–Kermadec Islands volcanic arc, a subduction zone extending from New Zealand north-northeast to Fiji. It lies about 100 km above a very active seismic zone. The island arc is formed at the convergent boundary where the Pacific Plate subducts under the Indo-Australian Plate
