Mother hen uses her body to protect chicks from the wet weather.

Hens are symbols of motherhood. During the first four to eight weeks or so, the chicks stay close to their mother, gathering beneath her wings every night at dusk.

There is a biblical quote about the mother hen gathering her chicks under her wings.....

LUKE 13:34

" O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!....."
