It's a rainy day in the national park, and in the distance a baby elephant gives birth to a new calf. Immediately after the birth of a calf, the rest of the herds come together to admire and protect the new family member. They celebrate the birth, waving their ears and trumpeting.

A newborn calf weighs about 120 kilograms (250 pounds) at birth and is about three feet tall. The baby elephant doesn't see very well at first, but recognizes its mother by touch, smell and sound. The gestation period of a female elephant will last about 23 months. The birth interval is 4 to 5 years and the calves will stay with their mother for 3-4 years.
