Daniel 7 Part 4 - Daniel Study

Daniel received a vision from God, and he saw four great beasts come up out of the sea. An angel later came to Daniel and gave him the interpretation of these four beasts. Look at Daniel 7:17, the angel said: These four huge beasts represent four kingdoms that will arise from the earth. In our previous segment we learned that the first beast was like a lion, the second beast looked like a bear with three ribs in its mouth, and the third beast looked like a leopard with four heads. Now, the fourth beast was different; it was terrifying and frightening and very powerful. Daniel said it was different from all the former beasts and it had ten horns.

Notice the parallels between Daniel 2 and Daniel 7. In Daniel 2, the head of gold is the same nation, same kingdom, same Empire, as the lion. The chest of silver in Daniel 2 is the same thing as the bear in Daniel 7. The thighs of brass in Daniel 2 are the same thing as the leopard in Daniel 7. And, of course, the legs of iron in Daniel 2 are the fourth Kingdom, the monster, in Daniel 7.

God uses repetition and enlargement to help us understand, very clearly, the progression of the kingdoms so that there can be no mistake about their identity. We know the kingdom of Babylon rose to world Dominion around 605 BC and collapsed in 539 when Cyrus and Darius conquered Babylon; and the Bible says that King Belshazzar was killed that very night.

After this, the Medo-Persian Empire lasted about 200 years and it fell in 331 to Alexander the Great. The Grecian Empire, then, lasted about a 150 years. When Greece collapsed the Roman Empire finally gained world dominion. Scholars and historians say Rome fell around AD 76. So the Roman Empire lasted approximately 600 years, Greece 150 years, Persia about 200 years, and the king of Babylon – where the story starts – approximately 70 years. These are the first four empires mentioned in Daniel.
