Sea turtles (superfamily Chelonioidea), sometimes called sea turtles, are testudines and reptiles of the suborder Cryptodira. The seven extant species of sea turtles are 1) Green sea turtle, 2) Loggerhead sea turtle, 3) Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, 4) Olive Ridley sea turtle, 5) Hawksbill sea turtle, 6) Flatback sea turtle and 7) Leatherback sea turtle Tortoise. All six species of sea turtles in US waters (loggerhead, green sea turtle, hawksbill, Kemps ridley, olive ridley and leatherback) are endangered and/or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The seventh sea turtle species is the flatback, which is present in the waters of Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. Sea turtles can be divided into the categories of hard shell (chelonid) and leathery shell (dermochelid). There is only one dermochelid species which is the leatherback sea turtle.
