Jews did serve in the roman military in various capacities from early in Augustus' rule to the 5th century CE. Jews in the Roman military came from many different places. Some were settlers in Rome or other parts of the Italian peninsula but most came from Roman provinces such as Egypt and Armenia. Some Jews volunteered for the Roman army to gain citizenship or increase status and others were conscripted. Jews served many roles in the military and could even gain high rank. 27 When I have brought them again from the people & gathered them out of their enemies' lands & am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28 Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.
