Welcome to episode 3 of The Lord of the Rings series, first broadcast in 1981 on BBC Radio 4.
Gandalf is played by Michael Hordern, better known to those of a certain age as Paddington Bear in the children's TV series. Frodo is played by Ian Holm, better known to many as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's later film version.
Peter Woodthorpe played Gollum and Michael Graham Cox played Boromir; both had previously voiced the same roles in Ralph Bakshi's animated version.
And Bill Nighy as Sam Gamgee before he was famous!
This was originally broadcast as 26 half hour episodes, but every broadcast since was in combined hour long episodes. This version from tape, with its two sides format, is the closest you can get to the original format in which it was broadcast (i.e. 26 separate episodes).
I hope you enjoy it.
All the best.
Doctor Alex.
