Centrist Senate Democrats Signal Opposition to Biden Banking Nominee

A group of Senate Democrats have privately voiced their opposition to President Biden’s nomination of Saule Omarova to become a top banking regulator, likely scuttling the academic’s chances of confirmation. Sens. Jon Tester of Montana, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Mark Warner of Virginia—who are centrist Democrats—conveyed their opposition . . . Warner and Tester challenged Ms. Omarova at a Nov. 18 hearing over her past writing and thinking on banking oversight. Omariva earlier this year calling for smaller oil-and-gas companies to go bankrupt to aid the U.S. in tackling climate change. “My intention was…exactly the opposite,” she said. “We need to help those companies to get restructured.” (restructured? ? ? ?) Ms. Omarova’s past academic work calling for shrinking big banks and creating a much bigger role for the Federal Reserve in consumer banking has generated a backlash.

With Republicans unified in their opposition, Ms. Omarova would need approval from all Senate Democrats to win confirmation in the closely divided Senate.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is an independent bureau of the Treasury Department. It oversees about 1,200 banks with total assets of $14 trillion, about two-thirds of the total in the U.S. banking system.

Report: Biden's Radical Banking Nominee Gets Shock News, Now Facing Impossible Odds
Axios reported three Democratic senators who serve on the Banking Committee — Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, Jon Tester of Montana and Mark Warner of Virginia — told chairman Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio on a Wednesday call they oppose Saule Omarova’s appointment to head the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

Sens. John Hickenlooper of Colorado and Mark Kelly of Arizona also oppose the nomination, according to Axios.

The New York Post reported Omarova is a Cornell University law professor who was raised in the former Soviet Union and has advocated for an end to banking “as we know it” by moving Americans’ finances from private banks to the Federal Reserve.
