"Eyes are Like Windows" by THE HAZE BROTHERS

From the archives of the SACRED HAZE era, "Eyes Are Like Windows" was written during the late 80’s, and recorded by The HAZE Brothers (Carey & David) as an acoustic track for one of the demo tapes released during that era. The song was primarily written by David Haze, with some musical polishing and phrasing contributed by Carey Haze. The lyrics generally reflect the positivity that David Haze was radiating during that period, full of hope that the beauty of nature and the universal love of humanity could actually be a catalyst for a harmonious existence on the earth. The chorus was actually a twist of a line from a book from one of David’s favorite authors, Carlos Castaneda, which reads, “The eyes can be windows that peer into boredom or peek into that infinity.” Whereas David’s lyrics state, “Eyes are like Windows, facing at the sun, mesmerizing everything, until the day is done”. Although not an exact plagiarism, the credit must be given for the inspiration. The dreamy, universal message of the song takes a more personal, introspective turn on the bridge/coda, where it says, “It’s hard to be your mother and your father son. When you see that your life has just begun. In your dreams you will find the open door, and finally see what you’re pushing for.” These lyrics were (and still are) very important to David Haze, as it is the testimony of a young man (or any man) facing down the challenges of growing up in a modern (and sometimes harsh) society. Despite his love for nature and the love and support of parents to guide him, in reality he is all alone, following his dreams to the best of his ability. Simple yet powerful, the lyrics capture a moment in time that is still just as relevant today. The song starts with a simple chord progression reminiscent of early Allman Brothers, with guitar phrasing from Carey that reflects the lyrical melody of the song. Although simple, the chords and phrasing create a simple palette for the lyrics that follow, giving the listener a vivid description of the landscape of the California coastline, where David and the band were raised, and living at that time. The structure of the song reflects David’s musical composition training he acquired from attending Cabrillo Community College in Santa Cruz, during the year that he, Carey, and Rick Thornsly lived in the area.
The original video was produced by ERICSUM PRODUCTIONS, and was conceptualized entirely by Eric Van Thillo. The video features original paintings by Eric Van Thillo, and he saw this as an opportunity to showcase his work in musical gallery, using video as a medium. Albeit primitive production quality, ERICSUM used creativity and innovative editing to make the perfect video, to capture not only the song and its message, but to share with the world his own artistry, something for which he was never truly given the credit he deserved.
