History of Baseball in Cuba: Cuban National Series 1961-1977

Athletics in Cuba have been categorized as amateur since 1961. That is the same year that Fidel Castro Nationalized the majority of industries including baseball. The Cuban National Series launched as part of this initiative.

NOTE OF CORRECTION:
At the 21 second Mark I indicate American Students and Sailor introduced the game to the island but according to César Brioso in his book “The Last Seasons in Havana” baseball was actually introduced by a returning Cuban National who had studied abroad.
“The American Civil War raged on and Cuba remained within the stranglehold of Spanish Colonial rule when Nemesio Guilló brought the first baseball and bat to his native Cuba in 1864."
