In the 1920s Abel Linares was the most powerful man in Cuban baseball. He owned both of the eternal rivals of Habana and Almendares but struggled to establish sustainable franchises outside of Havana.

The Cienfuegos Petroleros (later Elefantes) were a team that were originally established in the Pearl of the South. They had many starts and stops and saw their most sustained success when they reformed in the late 1930s as the Cienfuegos Elefantes but played their games in Havana.

For one season in 1928-1929 they found success on the diamond spearheaded by Negro League imports such as Legendary Cool Papa Bell.

Cool Papa Bell was said to be the fastest player in the Negro Leagues and used that speed to find success in baseball leagues all over the world and now resides in Cooperstown at the Hall of Fame.
