A ice hockey fan has been given a scholarship after alerting a coach to a cancerous mole on his neck.

Medical student Nadia Popovici told Sky News she initially thought she’d made a mistake in telling Vancouver Canucks coach Brian Hamilton to see a doctor ASAP.

Nadia was at a Seattle Kraken and Canucks' match in October when she spotted the mole on the back of Hamilton's neck as she watched the game.

She wrote a message on her phone telling him to seek medical help.

He did - and found the mole to be malignant melanoma - it was removed and he is now cancer free.

The two teams have now clubbed together to pay Nadia’s $10,000 student medical fees.
