Dog owners' perspectives on risks, benefits, and nutritional value of raw diets compared to commercial cooked diets.
The practice of feeding dogs raw meat-based diets is a topic of growing interest to dog owners and veterinary professionals, with Google searches for "raw dog food" quadrupling in the past 10 years ( Google Trend Data, 2020 ) . Estimates of the percentage of dog owners who feed vary, but experts agree that the practice is increasing in both the United States and Europe ( Davies, Lawes & Wales, 2019 ).As raw dog food feeding becomes more common, there has been an increase in research into the safety of the practice, particularly the potential for nutritional imbalances and the microbiological risks associated with raw meat. Leading veterinary organizations, from the American Veterinary Medical Association to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, discourage feeding RMBDs, but due to its growing popularity, some owners are clearly not heeding their warnings.
Despite the increased popularity and interest in RMBDs, little research has been published on dog owners' opinions of this type of feeding and comparing it to feeding commercially prepared cooked diets (CCDs).
