Venus fly traps are native to wetlands on the eastern coast of the United States, specifically the Carolinas. Admittedly, when one ruminates on the origins of the most famous flesh eating vegetation of all-time, the marshes of the cackalacky might not be the first place you think of, but it's true. The VFT , along with roughly 750 different species of meat munching plants , derive at least some of their nutrients by trapping , killing and absorbing insects that make the mistake of falling prey to their crafty snares . their traps (aka lobes) on dead leaves, or dust or whatever else may fall onto them, two trigger hairs inside the mouth of the lobe must be activated. Once the first hair is active , a second hair must be triggered in 20 seconds less , otherwise the lobe stays open For digestion to begin , the activation of five more trigger hairs - not including the two re quired to close the trap - is necessary to further safeguard the needless squandering of diges tive enzymes . By the time digestion begins , the lobe has been completely sealed and will act like a " stomach " until absorption is complete wildlifeinsyder
