"BluBlockers" Dr. Geek (Wilbur Johnson)

Dr. Geek, wordologist and “BluBlocker Man,” passed away on Nov. 28. Geek honed his craft of “wordology” on the streets of his native Detroit as a mobile ice cream vendor for several years.

Geek deeply believed the greatest changes to be made in the world could be accomplished through inspiring laughter and joy. He was steadfast in this belief as he traveled across the nation — under his now unforgettable moniker of “Dr. Geek” — spreading joy through clean, positive rhymes at tailgate games for college and professional teams alike, including the Los Angeles (later Oakland) Raiders, San Diego Chargers, USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, UCF Knights, Florida State Seminoles, Orlando Magic and many more.

Geek was known as a fixture of Venice Beach, Calif., where he performed as a part of the Blublocker Sunglasses infomercial, for which he earned the title “The BluBlocker Man.” Geek was also a prominent DJ and radio personality, sharing the airwaves with Big Boy of Power 106 and Stryker during his time at KROQ.

Geek’s impact can also be seen through his philanthropy; he served as an advocate for youth and families for more than 30 years, providing creative means of expression for youth through production and social outreach.

Geek’s funeral took place on Dec. 13, 2014, at Malibu United Methodist Church.
