OneWheel Pint | Austin Texas USA | Kids Learning to Ride-002
Vaughn's completion of the third week with the OneWheel, going into the fourth week; Saturday is the demarcation point.
15 August 2020
78 miles ridden since Saturday, 25 July 2020!
Will I hit the magic 100 mile point prior to the 25th of August?
Saturday the 15th of August was the first time that my daughter and her husband tried a OneWheel. It took them only a few minutes to grasp it. I think the Pint is a bit too small for my son-in-law; he's at 230 pounds and his feet are waay larger than mine. I suspect the XL+ is the board for him. My size 11 feet hang over the edge of the Pint a bit, which is fine. But his feet -- there was easily 25% of his foot off-board. On the other hand, it was the perfect size for my daughter, and she was soon riding on grass and smiling all the way. Our ride was again on the Riverside Drive area ... this is ideal because the City of Austin is barricading the area to vehicle traffic during weekends, allowing a safe area for micromobility users, joggers, cyclists, dogs, and squirrels to maneuver without fear of being squished by a big metal box.
Then on Sunday the 16th I explored Richard Moya Park, 10001 Burleson Rd, Austin, TX. By 10:30 am, the heat was already becoming unbearable and most of the 20-ish vehicles in the parking area had departed. The bridge is an apparently former railroad crossing that has been converted to a wood-slatted pedestrian bridge. It's literally, a "bridge to nowhere" as the northeast corner of the bridge stops at a set of double gates and then a public street. And the other end stops at a dirt and rock area. There was surely, at one point, a set of railroad tracks that went through here. Great that someone decided to retain the metal-girded bridge instead of demolishing it. It's really a nice fixture! now, riding on it with a OneWheel....very challenging. The boards are not flat, they are slightly twisted lengthwise due to weather, skewing like a corkscrew slightly. And the ends of 20% of the boards are curled upward. It was sort of like riding a motorcycle on grooved asphalt with oil, uphill, on a decreasing radius increasing camber turn. Yeah. Like that. Even though it was sketchy, it was still a hoot to ride several times.
The Pint has rapidly become my favorite cinematic video platform! Next month, hopefully, my long-ordered, Covid-19-delayed Skydio2 shall arrive. That will open an entirely new dimension of filming!
Lastly, today/tomorrow were the days that the five of us had planned to land in Tokyo, Japan, to begin our adventure. Mt Fuji-san was, of course, a highlight. Sigh.... we'll be there in 2021. Not sure how easily Painto-san will handle the ascent. :O
