Nathalie Richert, 22, from Sweden, is a model with ichthyosis, a rare genetic condition which causes people to lose the protective barrier that keeps moisture in their skin and to make new skin cells too quickly - leading to a build-up of red, scaly skin. However, Nathalie is one of only 20 people in the world with a form of the condition known as ‘ichthyosis with confetti’ in which the scaly skin is broken up by confetti-like patches of healthy skin. Growing up Nathalie struggled with insecurities due to her physical appearance. She said: “To look different in the ideal society, it hasn’t always been a positive thing. When I was younger, people thought I was contagious. Once when I was at a water park I wasn’t allowed to be there because of my skin condition.” However, Nathalie is now embracing her condition, posing pictures of herself not only on her social media platforms, but also participating in professional modelling shoots. She said: “Posting pictures online has absolutely made me feel differently because this is how I look, I shouldn’t hide it. I’ve got a lot of nice comments saying you’re such an inspiration, you look beautiful, your skin looks so fascinating with all the different patterns and colours. I love my skin because it makes me unique.” Nathalie also uses her social platforms to educate other people about ichthyosis. She added: “If anyone had a problem with my appearance I would tell them that I don’t feel about it, so why should you? No-one should hide because they look different.”
