12 Habits that damage your brain
1. Consuming too much sugar
Sugar has become a major problem in modern society. Consumption of sugar has steadily increased over the years, to the point that it is now considered toxic to our health. There are many ways that excess sugar can affect our health, but one of the newest studies show that consuming too much sugar can damage our brain health.
2. Not get enough sleep
Sleep is a vital need for human beings. An increasing number of studies have shown that insufficient sleep can have devastating consequences on many aspects of our health, including our mood, ability to focus, immune system and so on. The lack of sleep can even lead to death.
3. Wearing headphones and listening to very loud music
The ear canals are connected to the inner ear, which is filled with fluid. Loud sounds rupture the eardrum and cause the fluid to move back and forth in a process called head-pressure. The louder the sound, the more pressure it exerts on your skull. People who listen to loud music for many years are at risk of developing a degenerative brain disorder called tinnitus.
4. Skipping breakfast
Skipping breakfast is not a good idea if you want to maintain healthy brain function. This is because when you go without breakfast, your brain has less glucose available which leads to a drop in cognitive function. When your brain has less glucose available, less energy will be produced which in turn results in a decrease in cognitive function.
5. Eating too much food
Eating too much food can lead to negative impacts on brain health. The body then stops responding to the feeling of fullness and continues eating, which leads to weight gain and obesity. This in turn can lead to a number of other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory issues.
6. Sleeping with your head under the cover
A recent study found that sleeping with your head under the cover, or "co-sleeping," can damage your brain health. The study suggests that “co-sleeping” is linked to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and brain shrinkage.
7. Multitasking
Modern day multitasking is great for increasing productivity and efficiency, but is it worth the brain health trade-off? According to a study by researchers at Stanford University, people who multitask at work or with electronic devices may suffer from decreased cognitive abilities and an increased risk of depression.
8. Inadequate water intake
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 4 out of 10 adults are not drinking enough water. The need for water is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but recent studies show that inadequate water intake can lead to long-term health consequences. This post will explore the negative effects of chronic dehydration in the brain and body, as well as some tips on how to increase your water intake.
9. Smoking
Tobacco smoking is harmful for human health. This habit can damage your brain health. Smoking releases many toxins and cancer-causing chemicals into the body, where they can interfere with normal cell functioning. One of the most significant of these chemicals is nicotine, which has been proven to be addictive and contributes to the development of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
10. Consuming alcohol
Alcohol consumption is a large social event that many people partake in, but the long-term health effects of alcohol are not well-known. Drinking can lead to decreased brain size and function, as well as changes in mood. Alcohol addiction is also a possibility with frequent drinking. The risks of alcohol abuse should be considered before consuming any amount of alcohol, so be sure to drink responsibly.
11. Working when sick
The problem is that working when sick can damage your brain health. It's been shown that people who work when they're sick have increased cognitive impairment and activity in the areas of the brain associated with memory, decision making, and language skills.
12. Not Exercising
With so many other things going on in our lives, it can be difficult to find the time and motivation to exercise. It is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you are too busy to exercise.
We all have 24 hours in a day, so by finding ways to work out for just 10 minutes at a time, you can create enough space for exercise without taking away from the rest of your life.
