Serbia: Citizens block highway for third consecutive weekend over Rio Tinto - 11.12.2021

Mehrere Tausend Anwohner blockierten am Samstag in Belgrad das dritte Wochenende in Folge eine Autobahn und eine Brücke, um gegen das Bergbauprojekt des Unternehmens Rio Tinto zu protestieren. Obwohl der serbische Präsident Aleksandar Vucic Anfang der Woche angekündigt hatte, dass das neue Enteignungsgesetz, das Rio Tinto begünstigte, zurückgezogen wurde, setzten Umwelt- und Naturschutzorganisationen ihre Proteste fort und forderten die Behörden auf, Rio Tinto aus Serbien zu verbannen und das geplante Lithiumabbauprojekt in der Nähe des Jadar-Sees im Bezirk Macva zu stoppen. Several thousands of residents blocked a highway and bridge for the third weekend in a row in Belgrade on Saturday to protest against the Rio Tinto mining company's project. Despite the fact that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced earlier this week that the new law on expropriation, which favoured Rio Tinto had been withdrawn, ecological and environmentalist organisations continued protesting, demanding that the authorities ban Rio Tinto from Serbia and stop the planned lithium mining project near the Jadar lake in Macva district. Protests took place in other Serbian cities with roads also being blocked in Novi Sad, Nis, Preljina and Sabac.
