This is the stunning moment a photographer used his GoPro to film a dolphin keeping pace with a gigantic superyacht

Seafarer Ryan McColl was travelling on a superyacht in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Gibraltar when he managed to capture some spectacular video.

The crew had spotted a pod of dolphins playing around the bow of the boat and wanted to catch a better view.

Ryan from Norfolk, UK, took a ‘heaving line’- a braided line used to throw large mooring lines ashore- and attached GoPro camera to it before lowering it to the waterline facing back towards the ship.

The stunning footage shows the curious dolphins leaping out of the water as the huge superyacht is seen speeding in the background.

Ryan said: “The video shows dolphins playing around the bow of a superyacht. Some say they play there due to the pressure wave created in front of the ship.

“Basically, they can ride that pressure wave and get a free ride which is fun for them.

“Most people think the video is captured with a drone as the wind would blow the camera all over and it wouldn’t get a good shot.

“The relative wind to the ship was almost the same speed and same direction we were headed so in essence the wind force was cancelled out and it made the camera more stable.

“We played the video in the crew area on a large TV, and it was insane to watch it. To get such a close view with such a basic setup was extremely rewarding.

“You have to just try things when it comes to photography. This could have easily not worked, or the camera been lost but instead the shots are incredible.

“I think people need a similar attitude to the dolphins, sometimes just do something for the fun of it. People are too serious sometimes and forget to enjoy the ride.”

The footage was captured in 2018.
