"TWO women, one cradling a baby, sit on the steps of a Sydney pub: not because they enjoy a lunchtime glass of wine in the sun but because, typically of the 1950s, they were not allowed inside the public bar. People forget how dramatically social attitudes towards women and alcohol have shifted in 50 years, says Charles Pickett, the curator of an exhibition on drinking habits in Sydney.

Take one of the exhibits, a red light emblazoned with the legend Ladies present that once hung in a Sydney saloon bar.

"The light would come on whenever women came in," Mr Pickett explains. "Presumably it was a warning to the men to stop swearing, which encapsulates the whole attitude towards women and pubs back then."

Paradoxically, many of Sydney's first publicans were women, partly because so many women were enthusiastic customers.

What changed, says Mr Pickett, was the success of the temperance movement, "probably Sydney's first women's political movement, based on the damage alcohol was doing to family life".

By 1900 it had become socially unacceptable for "respectable women" to frequent hotels, an attitude that prevailed until the late 1950s, when surveys found that only one in four women drank alcohol."
