BIG TALK: From Prison to Professor - Joseph Pearce talks with Matt Treacy on the battle of ideas

Matt Treacy talks to Joseph Pearce about the trajectory of his life from spending time in prison to becoming a professor, author, thinker and speaker – and about the battle of ideas in the modern world.

Joseph Pearce was born in London in 1961. He became well known as a teenager and young man for his role as one of the leaders of the youth section of the National Front which was a racist organisation with links to Ulster loyalism.

He served two prison sentence under incitement to hatred legislation but during the second period he began to question the racism he had promoted and began to read the great Catholic author C.K Chesterton.

The influence of Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc played a key role in Joseph’s conversion to Catholicism.

He has published biographies of both writers as well as an impressive series of books on Shakespeare, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Tolkien and others. He has also published a fascinating autobiography entitled ‘Race with the Devil’ which details his own life’s journey.

He currently lives in the United States where he is a director of the Augustine Institute based in Colorado.
