Part 9, US Mexico Border, White Sands, Roswell. WHAT WALL? , cross country trip in a Jeep
Our next stop or I should say ride, is the USA Mexico border as we hit a back road to New mexico from Arizona. There was a cool pony ride on the way, only cost 25 cents too!!
the border fence is just that a FENCE in this area, where they could not dig the post in, they put X's on the ground. the GPS took us in and out of Mexico (doubt if that was correct) but it was cool to hear "welcom to the United States" hehe.
When we folloed the border about 10 miles it ended and we had to turn around, where we were greeted by a border partol (border protection) agent who kindly told us they were watching us on camera. hehe. so we drove back and hit the main back road through.
Went through a checkpoint,
Visited the White sands, which was cool but way too comercial for our liking.
Then we stopped at Roswell, this was a bit of a dissapointment, at least the stores were. I could not find a realistic alien mask.. wow. I would have much rather went to the crash site.
Saw a hug convoy of mardi gras floats floats holding up traffic for hours on the highway, then we were triggered by a confederate flag!! hehe.
Driving cross country in the JKU was not bad at all, nothing like the old jeeps that's for sure. I would do it again in a heartbeat! Want to go back, like now!!
We had no idea what to expect, I researched what I could online. Just my wife and I on the trip. Wish we did a whole week at Moab, there are so many trails to explore, even a week you would not have enough time.
First thing I recommend is joining the Moab friends for wheeling group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/478376492216414/?ref=group_header
Many of the members helped me out on deciding what to do there!
2nd is a good GPS and the Moab “guide to Moab back road and 4 wheel drive trails” newest edition http://amzn.to/2Ch8RV6, you'll need it because you will lose cell signal when you are out there. 3rd is know your vehicle, and know its capabilities.
First time off-roaders would be fine on the easy trails and some of the moderate, but most the hard trails you need extra clearance, more articulation and sometimes lockers. A winch is also a good idea if you go it alone like we did. Ride along with us and see :)
