The film was launched in Chennai, and it was shot in Namibia, Malaysia, Zanzibar, and South Africa, among other places outside of India. It was published worldwide on April 3, 2009, to generally positive reviews. Ayan was deemed Tamil cinema's sole blockbuster of the year, grossing around 80 crores (US$11 million) globally. In Kerala, the film was also a hit.
