HOW TO INTRODUCE A PROTECTIVE DOG TO STRANGERS

Stranger danger!⁣

I get tonsss of messages from people asking how to stop their dog from barking at people who come to their home.⁣

It can be prettyyy embarrassing to have your dog ferociously barking at every guest who walks up to your dog...⁣

How I recommend working through this "reactivity" (when your dog is barking at other dogs, people inside and outside of your home) is by preventing it altogether!⁣

Meaning: When you're in a situation where you think your dog may react (or has already reacted), distance your dog far enough away from the trigger object and call your dog to focus on you instead of the thing he’s reacting at. This creates a neutral association to the trigger instead of a negative one and it mentally takes away the dog’s job/need to protect by you directing him to look to you instead!⁣

Do this so that you can grasp your dog's full focus and then reward your dog so that he associates the situation with positivity!!⁣
⁣
If your dog's focus starts to wander back to the trigger object, in addition to calling him back to you, make him "work" (sit, lay down, touch, etc) to help prevent him from reacting.⁣

No matter if the reacting (barking) is just out of excitement, fear, or confusion/aggression, the key is to get your dog to calm down and focus on you before he goes up to anyone.⁣

Patience is crucial here! Remember that we're changing your dog's natural instincts and what he's been doing his whole life.⁣

This process takes time and lots of hard work!!! You only get 100% results if you put in 100% of the work!

Most people aren't willing to do what it takes to get the results they want with their dogs, especially behavioral issues.⁣
