Western Kentucky University and it's connection to the American Civil War

Western Kentucky University has a unique connection to the American Civil War. The campus is build on top of the remains of a Civil War fort that was originally built by the Confederates and then occupied by the Union.

The old fort was originally built on Vinegar Hill as the area was called and named Fort Johnson by the Confederates. When the Union army took over the area, they renamed it to Fort Lytle.

Bowling Green has several Civil War sites throughout the community. As the campus changes over time much of the landscape will certainly change with it and the layout of the land lost to history.
