Spanish 101 - Learn How to Use the Verb ESTAR in Spanish for Beginners - Spanish With Profe
In this video you will learn how to use the verb ESTAR in Spanish.
In Spanish to express the verb "To Be" in English we use two different verbs: Ser & Estar.
There are also other verbs; such as, haber, hacer, and tener, which I will talk about in another video. So stay tuned.
Estar is used to talk about; location, temporary conditions, health, mood, and the present progressive (future lesson)
Yo estoy ( I am)
Tú estás (You are)
Él, Ella: está (He is, She is)
Usted está You (formal) are)
Nosotros-Nosotras estamos ( We are)
Ellos, Ellas: están (They are)
Ustedes están (You all are)
Examples of usage of estar:
Yo estoy en casa. ( I am at home.) Location
Yo estoy enferma. ( I am sick.) Health
Yo estoy feliz. (I am happy.) Temporary mood
Some prepositions and their usage and meaning.
with Ser= we use the preposition "de" De= from
with Estar= we use the preposition "en" En=in or at
Since we use Estar to talk about location, we need to learn some prepositions of location such as the following:
al lado de (Next to; beside)
a la derecha de (to the right of )
a la izquierda de (to the left of)
en (in, on, at)
cerca de (near)

detrás de (behind)
encima de (on top of)
entre (between; among)
lejos de (far from)
sobre (on; over)
El perro está a la izquierda de mÃ. (The dog is to the left of me)
El gato está a la derecha de mÃ. (The cat is to the right of me)
La universidad está lejos de mi casa. (The university is far from my house.)
Ser is used to talk about; origin, occupation, to tell time, to identify oneself, characteristics (personal traits)

Soy de los Estados Unidos. I am from the United States. (origin)
