It may seem too basic, but what IS a vigilante?

Is a person who seeks to protect life and property by standing between those things, and people seeking to harm them, a vigilante?

No matter what definition you can find saying that's the case, IT'S NOT.

A vigilante is someone who seeks RETRIBUTION FOR acts he or she considers illegal or otherwise heinous or bad.

If no evil act (or even one thought to be wrong) has yet occurred, calling people acting in protective capacities "vigilantes" shows you DON'T UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE WORD.

Kyle Rittenhouse, George Zimmerman, the police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, the officers who shot the young lady brandishing a knife as she chased others threateningly, even the police who shot the man in Kenosha who failed to comply (and looked to have been carrying or going for a knife), WERE NOT acting as vigilantes when they did what they did.

Of course, that doesn't mean they're innocent of wrongdoing, but ascribing to them malicious intent, when the sought to protect themselves or others is INAPPROPRIATE.

They may have (or may have needed to) faced (or face) justice for doing things they shouldn't have done. Even so, they WERE NOT seeking some sort of retribution for wrong perceived. As such, calling them vigilantes is OBVIOUSLY errant.

Why others aren't point this out, and more importantly, apparently UNDERSTANDING it, is beyond me.

That's what brought about this edition of The Daily Summation from Kurt's Religion and Politics.
