Blue and White Porcelain Bowl with Lid

The charm of blue and white porcelain is one of the most coveted styles of ceramic art for both collectors and artist. The origin of this beautiful coloring is thought to lie in Iraq around the 9th century. The Cobalt pigment is one of the few pigments that can handle the highest firing temperatures required for porcelain.

In the early 14th century, mass-production of fine, translucent, blue and white porcelain started in Jingdezhen(sometimes called the porcelain capital of China). It was widely exported and inspired wares in Islamic ceramics, Japan, and later in the 18th century European earthen wares.

Blue and white porcelain became an icon of delicate craftsmanship and associated with pride and prestige. It continues to be produced today, most of it imitating earlier styles and patterns.
