Non-compliance of Maine Coon appearance to generally accepted standards automatically excludes it from the ranks of show class representatives. In other words, such individuals are denied entry to exhibitions. Grounds for "exclusion" from participation in all sorts of competitions may be too fluffy coat in the area of abdomen, too short tail, small size of an animal, spots and mottles on the coat, relief form of nose (the presence of a noticeable depression in its center), widely set ears, and uniform hair length throughout the body. Such genetic abnormality as polydactyly (having too many toes on the paws of the cat) is also considered a good reason to forbid participation of the animal in public events. At one time, this mutation was common in Maine Coons, and therefore acquired the status of a major defect in the breed.
