United thrashed Tottenham last week to reclaim some prestige after an ugly 5-0 home loss to Liverpool, but they were clearly second best against City on Saturday, suffering both with and without the ball.

Poor defence resulted to an own goal by Eric Bailly, and then a goal by Bernardo Silva on the stroke of half-time, with Luke Shaw to blame.

"Obviously, everyone is disappointed with the result, as well as with the performance," the Portuguese midfielder told MUTV.

"We know we can perform more, and we know this isn't good enough for a guy representing such a prestigious club." We must examine ourselves in the mirror."

After United, who finished second in the Premier League previous season, spent extensively in the summer window, Fernandes apologized to fans who were expecting a title push.

"We have to look at ourselves, everyone in his house," he said, "and figure out what we can do better to help the squad."

"All we have to do now is apologize to the supporters, and that's it, since we didn't do enough."

He described the mood as "amazing."

"They pushed us to the end, trying to give us that energy, but it wasn't enough from us."
In Saturday's play, United made numerous defensive errors, and the scoreline could have been even more lopsided if David de Gea had not made a series of outstanding saves.

"We have to guard David better because he is protecting us a lot, and we have to support him because he cannot make eight, nine saves every game and still lose goals," Fernandes added.

United had only been three points below City heading into the game, but their defeat means they finished Saturday with the same number of points as Burnley in the final relegation spot.
