Works - Part 1 - The Non-Pauline authors

This message is Part 1 in a four-part series on "works." The entire series will take us through each of the New Testament authors who address the subject. The purpose of the series is to illustrate the fact that "works" is an expectation of God, that is, in addition to faith we are expected to demonstrate love in all the ways love may be manifested, to the best of our abilities, through the acts of charity, mercy, forgiveness, and preaching. Part 1 and 2 will take us through the non-Pauline authors. Part 3 and 4 will address Paul.

I am convinced that most of the "Christian" churches rely heavily on Paul's continued rhetoric that we are justified through faith and faith alone. We not only believe the churches are going down the wrong path in their preaching on Paul, and leading others to incorrect and incomplete conclusions, we believe Paul's final position on the topic is very similar to the others. That is, the faithful must demonstrate good works to realize their hope.

In fact, when we hear prominent preachers talk about faith and works, they all begin with Paul's mantra by indicating that faith is all we need, but shortly after … they address how we need to live a Christian life, characterized by good behaviors, because if we live a life in fornication, stealing, and all the other behaviors which fall under the biblical term of “iniquities,” then we will fail to realize our hope.

They all end up where we begin. Demonstrating the good "Christian" behaviors is the "works" eluded to by all the New Testament authors including Paul, that of demonstrating love through action, of which is required to realize our hope.
