what is a funnel in sales

Sales funnels are everywhere and used in all sorts of ways by all sorts of businesses. If you aren't sure what a sales funnel is, it's actually very simple. Picture a funnel -- a wide opening at the top and a small hole at the bottom, right?

Here's an example: When you pull into the parking lot at your local coffee shop and walk in, you just entered the top of their sales funnel. You haven't bought anything yet so you aren't a customer yet...but you're thinking about it, right?

An employee comes up and asks you if you'd like to try a small sample of their new carrot muffin. Sure, why not? You just moved a little further down their funnel...you're that much closer to becoming a paying customer. Once you decide to buy, you step up to the counter, right?

You order your coffee and you become a paying customer. But wait...the person behind the counter -- the barista or whatever they call them -- says, "Would you like a carrot muffin for just 49-cents more?" Why not, right?

So that's an example of a sales funnel...it's a process of slowly, progressively bringing people down the funnel and towards a purchase. Really, you could say that it's a process of turning strangers into customers, because our relationship gets closer and closer to them as they move down through our funnel.

So keep an eye out for sales funnels in your daily travels...at fast food restaurants, on websites, at the grocery store...everywhere. Then, begin thinking about how you can create a similar structure for yourself in your online business.
