A TEENAGER suffers from Tourettes so badly that she has been accused of faking it. Nicole, 14 was diagnosed with Tourettes aged 13 after her mum, Jodie noticed her face and hand tics had developed seemingly overnight. Her vocal tics developed quickly too, and consist of swearing, screaming and whistling, as well as physical arm movements. In moments of extreme emotions, Nicole can sometimes be violent towards herself, scratching and hitting her head. She told Truly: “It comes out of the blue, you just never know. There are moments where you can be really scared, because you don’t know what’s going to happen, or when it’s going to happen.” Nicole also has FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) which means her arms and feet can sometimes lock if her tics get too overwhelming. “I can’t control what I say or what I do”, she said. “There are things I say that I would never say if that was me.” Despite her diagnosis, a lot of people have accused Nicole of making up her tics for attention, including close family members, and online commenters. So Jodie started up her TikTok page to show how her tics work and raise awareness of the reality of life with them. “I wanted to give people the reality of what Tourettes are, and share that it’s not just swearing”, she explained. Their account has also attracted supporters, commending the family for their openness. The mother and daughter duo make dancing videos and show the funnier side to her condition. “One way my family deals with it is by laughing”, Nicole said. “You don’t need to care what other people say.”
