Thanks to its geographical location and weather, Montreal has taken advantage of its agricultural potential and became a major apple producer. In 1900, 75% of houses had apple trees in their backyard. In the early 1900's, the Montreal's Agricultural Station estimated it catered for 200 million apples a year, leading Montreal to be nicknamed the 'apple capital of North America'. Today, only 4 orchards remain green in a city that has seen a lot of change.
