It is the year 1894. Timothy Moor, an Irish petty thief, is caught as a blind passenger onboard a ship which has just arrived in Plymouth, England. He manages to escape by jumping into the water and diving away. Tim emerges in the sewers of Plymouth and reaches a laundry where the washerwoman Emily is smitten with the young man’s charm and helps him to hide from the police.

In the meantime the eccentric Detective Sergeant Briscol arrives in Plymouth to take his new post at the local police office. He isn’t welcomed as warmly as he’d hoped for, and is immediately called to the cemetery where the body of the recently deceased alleged serial killer Sir William Lewis has gone missing. When the dead gravedigger is found near the empty crypt, it is rumoured that Sir William has come back from the dead…

As Tim’s and Briscol’s paths cross, they become unlikely allies in a mystery which gets darker the deeper they dive into it.
