is wordpress free for business

A big question that's probably on your mind is, Is WordPress free? And the answer is, kinda! As we've discussed in other posts, WordPress comes in two flavours, WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

WordPress.com is what's called the "hosted" version of WordPress -- because here, the WordPress service takes care of your hosting for you -- while WordPress.org is called "self-hosted" because with this version of WordPress you'll have to set up your web hosting yourself.

Out of the box, both versions of WordPress are free to use. However, depending on how you decide to set yourself up, you might run into a few expenses. Thankfully, no matter how you decide to use WordPress the costs are reasonable.

If you decide to run a hosted WordPress.com website, there are no upfront costs. However, WordPress.com comes with restrictions and limitations.

For example, by default WordPress.com websites include advertising and a branded domain name (yourdomain.wordpress.com). To remove these limitations, you'll have to upgrade to a paid account.

Running a self-hosted WordPress website means your site is free of ads and branding, but you'll need to pay for hosting and a domain name. As mentioned earlier, these costs are reasonable though. A domain name runs about $10 a year, and web hosting can be as low as $5 per month.

So, the expenses aren't huge. You may have a few other expenses along the way, like premium themes and plugins, but these are all optional.

So obviously, right out of the box, going with a hosted WordPress.com website is the cheapest option (cuz it's free!)...but honestly, for a business website it's much better to go with a self-hosted WordPress site.

Really, it doesn't get any better than a self-hosted WordPress website. Reliable, low-cost hosting is readily available. For just a few dollars a month you can have a pro-looking, fully customizable self-hosted WordPress site with a custom domain and no advertising...running exactly the kind of website you want.

And if you'd like some WordPress web hosting recommendations, I'll leave some recommendations for you in the Show Notes below.
