If you're pursuing a content marketing strategy boosted by SEO and keyword targeting (which is a very powerful combination) then it's important to have a general understanding of how search engines work and what they prioritize. And here, I primarily mean Google...because at least at this time, Google owns search, right?
So as far as Google (and other search engines) are concerned, their primary objective is to provide the best, most useful search results for their users -- people just like you and I who are searching online for information...and just like the audience of people that you want to build around your online business.
Right now, the exact sorts of people that you want to attract and serve are searching for answers to their pressing questions...they're looking for fixes to their challenges and problems...and they're actively seeking out information to help them get to wherever they're trying to go.
And so Google's job (and the primary function for all search engines) is to provide for internet searchers the best possible results for the sorts of words and keyphrases they're searching for.
The reason why providing the best possible answers to users is Google's number one priority is because if they started providing poorer search results, users would begin looking elsewhere...to alternative search engines. And if Google loses users...then Google loses revenue, big time.
So as online business owners, it's important that we understand this...and that we understand that Google's prime concern is it's users...not us online business owners. And that's okay...it's nothing against us...it's just how it all works.
And again, if we know and understand how it all works...then what we can do is, we can give Google and other search engines what they need, so that they can provide it's users -- internet searchers all over the world -- what they need.
Said another way, if we understand how search works and what Google's objectives are...then all we have to do is align with Google's objectives and we'll be rewarded with higher and higher search rankings.
So here's a few things to keep in mind in terms of how search works online. First, search engines have automated software called web crawlers, search bots, or spiders (whatever you want to call them) that crawl through the web, following links, and finding web pages.
The objective here is for Google and other search engines to understand what every web page on the web is about. Next, every single page that web crawlers and spiders find get added to the search engine's index -- a massively huge database that records all the web pages and websites that get found.
Finally, when a user searches for something, what they're actually doing is searching through this massive database. Search engines use extremely complex algorithms to then determine not only what pages should appear in search results, but also the strength of each page -- the relevance of each page...
...how strong each relevant page is for the keyword phrases that the searcher used. So that's the gist. Now a few additional points: First, web crawlers and spiders often return to websites and web pages that they've already crawled. Here, they're looking for any changes or updates...
...so that the search engine index is up to date. Search engines are constantly updating themselves with new and updated content. So as an aside, this is why it's so important to include a sitemap on your website...
...sitemaps give web crawlers a complete and updated list of all the pages, posts, articles, and other content on your website. Finally, every once in a while, Google will roll out an update to their core algorithm. These are always given code names, like Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, and so on.
And anytime an algorithm update comes along, lots and lots of website owners freak out and start losing their...
