are paid ads worth it for small business

Should your small business drive traffic through paid advertising? I suppose the answer to that question depends on if you're going for rapid growth or want to slowly build something that matters.

Most people want rapid growth. To sprint. To get results fast. If that's you, go ahead and give Google and Facebook your money. They'll gladly take it. But here's my two cents...

I hate advertising. In all it's ugly forms. Ads ruin every platform, every medium, and every skyline they touch. I think billboards should be outlawed. I think advertising is a stupidity tax paid by uncreative, lazy marketers who can't come up with any better ideas.

I use an ad blocker. When I hit a site, and they ask me to disable my ad blocker, I do 1 of 3 things:

I try to go with the text-only page (a nice feature that's built into FireFox). If that doesn't work and I really, really want to read the article, I'll copy and paste the link into another browser.

Or, if I'm only casually interested, I close the tab. Maybe this proves that online advertising works...it's only being shown to people who aren't running an ad blocker, who really, really want to see the content.

What about you? Does advertising work on you? Do ads influence your buying decisions? If they don't, then maybe they're no good for your business. Maybe there's a better -- albeit slower -- way. A way that has a heck of a lot more value and impact and meaning and usefulness.
