advantages of being a good public speaker
Nobody likes public speaking, right? In fact, studies have shown that some people fear public speaking more than the fear death! But at the same time, adding public speaking, or the ability to communicate to a large number of people is an invaluable skill.
Adding public speaking to your skill stack and combining it with virtually any other skill is incredibly powerful.
Are you great at outdoor adventure activities? What could you do with that if you added public speaking to it? Do you love writing songs? How could you amplify that with public speaking skills? Are you great at investing in run-down properties? How could getting good at public speaking supercharge that?
See, public speaking is one of these "universal skills" that everyone should have...that supercharge whatever it is that we do. Being able to get up in front of a group of people and tell them about what we do is like pouring gas on an open fire!
But again, most people are deathly afraid of public speaking...and the potential shame and embarrassment that may occur. Just like you, I was nervous as a public speaker. I hated public speaking in school and having to get up and read a speech or whatever.
It was torture! I absolutely hated it...that is until I got into teaching corporate classes and workshops. Getting into this line of work was the equivalent of giving an all-day speech in front of strangers 3-5 days a week.
And I'll tell you, some of the first classes I ever taught were absolute train wrecks. I remember going into the bathroom and nearly throwing up out of sheer nervousness. I wanted to quit so badly...but I refused. I was determined to get good at this.
Keeping at it, I slowly began realizing a few critical points about public speaking. So here's my crash-course in public speaking for you:
1) Psyche yourself out. Just before you get up to speak, relax and tell yourself that you'll be nervous later, after your speaking session is over. Instead, in that moment when you're speaking, you're there to serve your audience. It isn't about you at all...it's about them.
Deliver the goods to them...and then be nervous about the whole ordeal afterwards. Of course, afterwards there's no reason to be nervous because it's all over. This is a great psyche-out trick to pull on your brain.
2) Realize that it isn't about you. The audience doesn't care about you personally...and that's unbelievably liberating. What they care about is what's in it for them -- what you're saying to them and communicating to them.
That's why they're listening to you. So, just as I said a moment ago...give it to them. Really, in that moment, you're not really "you" if that makes sense. Instead, you're just an orator sharing information with others.
3) Stop caring. Stop caring so much about what the audience might be thinking, how you might be being judged or any of that stuff. Simply stop caring. Don't like what I'm saying? That's fine. I don't care. Leave a negative review or a downvote or whatever...So what?
I'm never gonna see it and even if I did, I wouldn't care at all. Why? Because my attention and focus is on my work and on serving and helping the people who DO care.
