how to register a small business domain name

One of the most important assets for your online business is your domain name -- that is, the address or URL for your website.

Now because your domain name is so important, there are a few important things for you to keep in mind...especially if you're brand new to all this and just getting yourself set up for the first time.

First off, if you're using a free web building tool like Wix or Shopify or SquareSpace or something similar, you're going to wind up with what's called a "branded" domain name. WordPress.com -- another free web building tool...not to be confused with WordPress.org -- does the same thing.

So your branded domain will look something like "yourdomain.wordpress.com" or "username.wixsite.com/siteaddress." Obviously, this is pretty terrible for online business.

Not only are branded domain names like these long and hard to remember for your visitors...but they look totally unprofessional. You know what they say? They say, "I'm too cheap to set up a proper, professional website for my online business!"

What's worse, if you do decide to register your business domain name through one of these free web builders, it can be a real pain -- if not impossible -- for you to ever point your domain name away from their service. In other words, you're stuck with 'em!

So avoid registering your domain name through a free web builder...and I strongly urge you to avoid these sorts of web builders altogether. There are much more powerful, autonomous, and customizable ways to build your business website -- all in a way that you own and control 100%.

Something else to avoid is registering your domain name with your web hosting company. Very often, web hosts will offer you a free domain name when you sign up with them...but read the fine print!

Oftentimes, your free domain name is only free for the first year. After that, you'll have to pay for your domain, often at inflated prices. So where the heck should you register your domain name? I strongly urge you to use an independent domain name registrar like NameCheap.

This way, you'll have complete control and ownership of your domain. You can point it anywhere you want, to any web host you want. And if you own multiple domain names, you can manage and monitor them all in one spot.
