This is the moment Australian cops discover a cycle causing a traffic tailback – because it was being pushed by a man driving a car.

The surprising footage was filmed by police officers travelling along Kent Street, in the town of Maryborough in Queensland, Australia.

The should the footage online with the comment: "Just when we think we have seen it all…"

Police said that the officers from the Maryborough Highway Patrol were conducting patrols on November 2 when their attention was drawn to a "wheely interesting" vehicle.

In a statement they added: "As per the photo below, the driver of the six-wheel drive was attempting a very unique and dangerous transportation method.

"Officers were glad to speak to this motorist before anything serious happened on our roads.

"The driver, a 30-year-old Maryborough man is to alleged to have been driving the vehicle with his left hand and was holding the bicycle outside of the driver’s window, wheeling it along as he drove along Kent Street.

"After speaking to police, the driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice."

In the footage, please turn round and pull the man with the cycle over with one of the officers saying: "I just pulled over because of this you can't do that."

The man inside then appears surprised and says: "oh really" to which the officer replies: "Why can't you stick it in the back of your hatch?"

The young man then complains it wouldn't fit, and is told by the policeman: "well, you can't drive along like that, you're holding up that big line of traffic that was behind you."

Still not convinced that he's been fairly stocked, the driver then replies: "I didn't want to go too fast in case it shot off into a car mate."

But the police officer is not impressed and housing clearly it is a "silly idea".

Sergeant Josh Churchward, officer in charge of Maryborough Highway Patrol said that this choice, even over a short distance, could have resulted in potentially devastating consequences.

He said: “Driving is something that requires your full attention and you should take all necessary care at all times.

“We’re glad nobody was hurt in this instance, but we do want to remind everyone that road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Something like this not only puts yourself at risk, but other road users too.

“Drive safely and expect police anywhere, anytime.”
