best business books for small business owners
Here's a list of top business books that you don't need to read...where the title says it all. Of course, it's still a really good idea to read 'em! Still that said, I have many of these books facing outward in my home office as a reminder of their message.
First up, is "Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty" by Harvey MacKay. Here, it's all about putting in the hard work way, way, waaaay before you're desperate and hungry. We've all heard the expression about when the best time to plant a tree is, right? Well, MacKay nails it here.
The next book whose title says it all is "Talent Is Overrated" by Geoff Colvin. A huge misconception that a lot of people have is that those who become successful are simply more naturally gifted than the rest of us. But the truth is that while certainly an ingredient, talent doesn't account for everything.
"Average is Over" by Tyler Cowen is our next book. This is really more of an economics book, but the title reminds us that the pre-internet era of homogenized, one-size-fits-all business, products, and services is long dead and gone. In other words, the era of average products for average people is over.
Next is "The Obstacle Is The Way" by Ryan Holiday. The gist here is that obstacles are not impenetrable barriers...but bridges. They're trials and challenges that are placed in our way to to challenge us and to call us to become better people. So don't fear or avoid obstacles...run towards them!
Now of course, all of this is a little tongue in cheek -- again, it's still a really good idea to read all of these. But in the meantime, remember to "Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty," that "Talent Is Very Much Overrated," that "Average Is Certainly Over," and that "The Obstacles You Face Reveal Your Way."
