I talk a lot about the importance of the microbiome, and the microbes living within our digestive tracts. Maintaining a balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria is imperative for good health.

A key player in helping to maintain this balance is our stomach acid, which acts as a gatekeeper to ensure that harmful bacteria doesn’t take up residence in our stomachs or intestines. 🙅‍♂️

When someone has low stomach acid, or hypochlorhydria, not only are they unable to properly digest their food (which can lead to nutrient deficiencies), they’re at greater risk of developing GI tract infections, gastritis, leaky gut, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (known as SIBO), stomach ulcers, and heartburn. 😟

Unmanaged stress and older age are two big causes of low stomach acid, as is the overuse of antacids and PPIs. An unhealthy diet full of processed, refined food and alcohol is also a major factor, as it contributes to stomach inflammation and dysfunction.

A person with low stomach acid may experience symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and heartburn 🔥, or notice undigested food in their stool.

➡️ To correct the problem, focus on eating a whole food, nutrient dense diet that includes bitter greens (like spinach, kale, dandelion, arugula, etc.), manage stress, chew food slowly (around 30 chews per bite is ideal!), and consider adding diluted apple cider vinegar to the diet. ⬅️
