cat and dog, wolf

Actually, cats and dogs shared a common ancestor. I don’t recall the Latin name, but it’s somewhere here on Quora.

At some point in the evolutionary time line they split into two differing species. The wolves we know today, was not one of them but may have evolved alongside other wolf species. They even share some common traits today. An acute sense of hearing (cats are more highly tuned), enhanced sense of smell, (dogs win out here), and not the greatest eyesight (as evidenced by the enhanced other senses.)

Both species have been bred over generations into different ‘breeds’ but they all come from a common ancestor.
