What does it mean to respect yourself?

There is a saying "give respect and take respect" giving respect alone is not gonna get you the respect that you think you deserve.

Personally, I don't expect respect at all. For me, it's part of the ego, am trying to conquer that, but anyway most of us do expect respect, maybe it's because that we all believe we are better than the other.
