Join me Halloween morning Sunday 2021 for an archery hunt. 39 degrees, NW wind, pressure steady going to rise at 29.02. After an evening of playing music Saturday at Gwin Girls Winery, evening though the weather wasn't exact I've been seeing this buck on SpyPoint Cell cams for a few days and moving first daylight as well. As I left the house I spooked some deer in the back yard. They didn't nasal blow on me, just ran off and not very far at that. I made my way back to my treestand. I've been working some mock scrapes as well as buck made scrapes so as I got closer I put some licking branch Gel from Black Widow on the bottom of my cleaned boots. When I got within 20 yards of my tree, I out some Doe Urine from Code Red, poured a little in the scrape then soaked a scent wick hung from the licking branch. Got settled in the tree well before daylight 645am. I seen no deer until this guy was right in my opening at 830am. No sound at all, just followed my foot trail in. Which is not always normal activity. I was able to get the main camera on, grab my bow and get pulled back. He was quartering hard angle toward me, not an ideal shot, however he was within 10 yards of me. Trying to find my sights was a foggy mess in my glasses. My aim eye was foggy, my other lens wasn't. I tried switching eyes all the while the buck was getting a little nervous. Just as the fog lifted a little, I was able to see chest and make an outstanding shot. Any further out from the stand I wouldn't have been able to make it. I've been practicing hard with my Darton Archery DS 714 this fall with the aim small miss small mentality. I used a RamCat fixed 3 blade broadhead that penetrated completely threw and he expired within seconds. This 2.5 year old quality buck represents the top 10% of bucks in my area and on our 20 acres. I'm very pleased with the buck and this hunt was very enjoyable. I did see other deer after the shot. The neighbors were riding around their property on an ATV about 15 minutes after I shot. Within 15 minutes of that 2 deer moved in their woods from west to east 70 yards to my south. 15 minutes after that a yearling buck made his way from our property to the neighbors coming from the area the buck laid. Shortly after that a doe coming from the middle of our property made its way south, found the dead buck, circled that for about 20 minutes. Made her way over to my treestand only about 50 yards or so, I tried to get a shot on her as well, but couldn't get a good shot. My rule of thumb on properties is to harvest 2 doe to every buck harvested, IF the area and property can sustain it. This buck will provide lean and clean protein for my family and I was able to share the experience with them helping me with the recovery. This is why we hunt, and hunters are the overwhelming majority of deer mangers and wildlife in general. Thanks for watching, please subscribe to this platform. Like, share, comment.
